The Dachshund

The Dachshund can be a great companion but might have a mind of his own. He is curious, mischevious and a bit of a clown. Devoted to his family, he can be a bit on the jealous side.

Description
This is perhaps the most easily recognized breed with it's short legs and long body. Comes in 3 varieties - short haired, wire haired and long haired.

Size
Three varieties of Dachshunds - Normal weighs about 20 pounds, miniature weighs about 9 pounds and Toy weighs about 8 pounds.

Color
Can be solid, bicolor, speckled, harlequin and piebald patterns. Solid are tan or yellow, Bicolor - chestnut along with black, brown or gray.

Origin
Originates from Germany where it was used to hunt badgers hundreds of years ago.

Temperament
This proud breed is affectionate and lively. Can be a bit of a clown and are very clever. Can be diggers as well as barkers.

Training
Can be difficult to train.

Living Conditions
Can be good apartment dogs provided they get a walk in each day.
